Five things I miss about Germany

Thanks to our global world, there are not too many things I miss about Germany besides my family and friends, of course. However, thinking about it, some things came to my mind which I know cannot just be bought online. As it is already July, I miss the summer the most, I guess. Two weeks ago it was 24 degrees, everyone put on their summer clothes and I was assured this it was very hot for the UK. That day, I stopped wondering why there are almost no outside pools or lakes to swim in here. The Brits like spas though; there are quite a few and you can find a sauna in almost every gym, but I guess this leads me to my next point: I miss the real saunas – one where it is forbidden to wear swimwear, one where people don’t leave after 2 minutes of complaining it is too hot, and one where it doesn’t cost a fortune to spend a nice relaxing day. I also miss riding my bike without risking being hit by a car while I am on a main road because there are no bicycle lanes. Number four on my list would be the German bakeries – not so much because of the bread (that one I can actually buy here in Tesco), but more because of the Saturday morning feeling when you go to your favourite bakery and get some Brötchen for your German breakfast, with all sorts of things on the table and some good coffee in your mug. Last but not least, I simply miss speaking German. I miss going into a shop and just speaking German to the saleswoman, and how she would say “Tschüüüss” when I leave.
