Greenlandic is back

Greenlandic is back

On 1 April 2010, EVS Translations received a short e-mail inquiry: “Could you please translate some documents into Greenlandic?”
At first we thought that this was a nice April Fool’s joke to appreciate, but it turned out to be an authentic and serious request.
20,000 pages of documentation needed to be submitted within a short time frame as the Greenlandic government now demanded submission of official documentation in Greenlandic.

Setting up a Team of Greenlandic Translators

Fewer than 45,000 adults speak Greenlandic, and there is not a single full-time translator among them! A creative and fast solution was needed. It is a long story, a very long story, but after hundreds of contacts and scores of trials, EVS Translations got together a team of some 25 people willing to participate in the project. All of them had other jobs and could only do the task in parallel to being x, y, and z. Funny or not, if we stated a job title now, it would be possible to identify the person out of the small pool of Greenlandic professionals!

Team Helped Us Become the Leader in Greenlandic Translations

Nowadays, EVS Translations works with contract in-country translators for Greenlandic on an as-needed basis. Thanks to our team of Greenlandic translators, we rapidly became the world leader in Greenlandic translations.

Recent Greenlandic Translation – Reports, Videos, Tenders

Translation of a series of scientific reports from Greenlandic into English. The research material encompassed more than 400 pages of geological surveys and geophysical data reports.

It was a large project covering translation of approximately  300,000 words of geological surveys, geophysical reports, drilling estimates, and related documentation for a leading oil and gas exploration and production company as part of their exploration efforts in and around Greenland.

Greenlandic voice overs for an oil health and safety video and script translations for an instructional video on how to divert icebergs away from drilling rigs.

Greenlandic Translation Tip

Translations into Greenlandic have an expansion rate of 50% or more, as Greenlandic is a highly descriptive language. Your target text will therefore be significantly longer than the English source text and require extra time to be translated and proofread.
