Some facts about Romania and Romanian language – EVS Translations

1) Romanian is part of the family of languages known as ‘Romance languages’, which includes French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. All of these derive from Vulgar Latin, which was the colloquial form of Latin used by merchants and soldiers during the Roman Empire. Romanian is the official language of both Romania and neighbouring Moldova.

2) When British expatriate David Bryan fell in love with Romania, learned the language and made it his home, Romania took him and his band, Hotel FM, into their hearts and entered them into the Eurovision Song Content where they placed 17th.

3) Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in 1987 and based the title character on Romania’s historical figure Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia (1431–1476/77). Vlad III’s trade regulations angered Western Political detractors and Saxon merchants and they tried ruining his reputation by spreading stories of his cruelty thus helping to create the story of a monster. When Vlad III’s father received the Order of the Dragon, his title became Dracul (draco is Latin for ‘dragon’, but also means ‘devil’ in Romanian). Vlad III took on the diminutive form of this title to become Dracula, or ‘son of the Devil’.

Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the EU

4) Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the EU becoming Romania’s capital city in 1862. Once known as the “Little Paris of the East”, this is a city that has been through some tough times. It was bombed heavily during World War II and, in the 1970s, had many historical areas flattened to make way for Systemisation and the Socialist realist-style developments of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s communist regime. An earthquake in 1977 also damaged parts of the city, which was also the location for some of the protests during the Romanian Revolution of 1989. These days, the city successfully continues to modernise and develop both economically and culturally

5) As of 2014, Romania became a member of the European Space Agency’s International Space Station program and therefore a co-owner of the International Space Station. The country is also participating in the development program for the European rocket Ariane 6. This allows Romania to bid for contracts for developing launcher components.
