What I miss about Bulgaria

What I miss about Bulgaria

A few things that I miss about my home country as a Bulgarian expat:

Weather
Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that my home country boasts the most perfect weather, but, at least, it is straightforward and we know our winters and our summers. While in Germany (my current country of residence), a weather protection pack should typically include a set of a warm jacket, umbrella and sunscreen, as the sky might change numerously throughout a given day.

Fruits and veggies
Bulgarian cuisine is not among the most impressive ones, but when comes to fruits and vegetables – their sweetness and taste can really enlighten one’s palate. Opposed to most Western supermarkets’ spotless and perfectly calibrated groceries, Bulgarian fruits and veggies come in random shapes and sizes, but the taste is worth all the curves and imperfections.

Directness
Bulgarian people are definitely not the friendliest out there, but just like our weather, we are fairly straightforward. Our vibes are easy to recognise, and as, by a cultural rule, we do not send out mixed and confusing signals, one is quite unlikely to ever be trapped in some hypocritical courtesy and not clearly spell out the names of, so to say, his friends and enemies.

Cafe gossip culture
Blame it on the communist regime, which thought us how to master the act of “killing time,” or on the truth that we naturally enjoy chatter,  but we have really excelled at sitting in and out, observing the passing by (do not expect us to mind our own business). Prepare to meet many Bulgarians, who are professionals at passing time in gossip, day by day, at different vibrant cafes.

Free Wi-Fi everywhere
If you see an empty coffee bar in Bulgaria, the reason might be that the owner is not offering a free Wi-Fi to the customers, a sin which no Bulgarian can tolerate. After all, what is the point of visiting a restaurant, a gas station, a hospital, a museum, an institution, a shopping centre, the gym, or your neighbour, if you even can not “check in”?!
